The WATCH Mission
  • The Washington Area Theatre Community Honors (WATCH) is an organization founded for the adjudication and presentation of annual awards recognizing artistic and technical excellence in community theatre throughout the metropolitan Washington, DC area, and that these honors will:
  • Foster encourage the growth of community theater;
  • Promote and enhance the image of community theater; and
  • Educate ad inform the general public about the theatrical opportunities provided by member theaters.

The WATCH Board Structure
  • Executive members: Chair, Treasurer, Secretary
  • Vital Positions: Adjudication Coordinator, Matrix/Calendar Coordinator, Tabulation Coordinator, New Member Coordinator, Training Coordinator, Nomination/Ceremony Coordinator

What WATCH Board Members Do
  • Participate in quarterly meetings
  • Liaison between theatre company and WATCH
  • Volunteer on committees as needed
  • Volunteer for/support annual  awards gala
  • Work closely with the Adjudication Coordinator to ensure smooth adjudication operations

Four WATCH Board Meetings
  • Autumn: Vote on new members, Dues payment, List of judges, Just the Facts
  • Winter: Tabulation Committee meeting, Nominations Event/Meeting, Annual Matrix distributed
  • Spring: Evaluate previous year (including by-laws, criteria, ceremony), Elections
  • Summer: Assess membership petitions
  • WATCH Board meetings are held the 3rd Sunday of January, April, July, and October

  • March: Award Ceremony

  • November/December: Adjudication Training

Liaison Between
Theatre Company and WATCH
  • Understand the WATCH Mission and By-Laws
  • Provide “Just the Facts” information
  • Manage theatre company’s judges
  • Consult theatre company for feedback/input regarding WATCH topics

Board Member Participation
  • 1st Year Members are encouraged to join the Tabulation Committee as Independent Tabulator
  • 1st Year Members present “PSA” at Award Ceremony
  • Participate in Award Ceremony tasks (Entertainment Coordinator, Playbill, Table Tops, “Vanna”)
  • Participate in Ad Hoc Committees

Managing Judges
  • Recruit judges and alternates (email is essential!)
  • Make sure they get training (Representative, too!)
  • Supervise schedules and remind judges of assignments
  • Assign alternate judges as needed, inform Adjudication Coordinator of changes
  • Supervise ballot reports and follow up with tardy judges

Managing Judges:
Recruit Judges and Alternates
  • Full calendar year commitment
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to any part of the DC metropolitan area
  • Well versed in many aspects of theatre
  • Assorted backgrounds
  • (choreographers, stage managers, master carpenters in addition to actors and directors)
  • Recruit at least two alternate judges
  • Build a solid team

Working with
 Theatre Company
  • Provide list of judges assigned to your box office so they can monitor reservations (remind them of WATCH ticket policies)
  • Follow up with WATCH Representatives whose judges have not made reservations
  • Inform Adjudication Coordinator if you need help contacting Representatives
  • Provide guidance to Playbill Editor and other members of the production team

  • Confirm intent to join with your Board (identify waiver needs)
  • Assign WATCH Representative
  • Recruit judges and alternates
  • Compile information for next calendar year
  • Attend October WATCH Meeting, pay dues
